Best available hypotheses for why consciousness exists

As someone who studies the brains visual center, you surely have some come across studies investigating consciousness. Of course, consciousness is not defined by visual signal and processing, but it does play a large part in human conscious perception. Could you devote some time to explaining prominent studies that investigate the prevailing hypotheses on what consciousness might be? What is missing from organisms that appear to lack it? Is consciousness in humans defined by the various visual-audio-smell-taste-tactile-preprioceptive-etc senses (unrelated: can you explain the definition of a "sense")? Is it limited to interactions between human cells, or do the microbioata play a role? What about the unfortunate neuro state of "brain dead"? Covering this topic without going into the philosophical-existential-religious nuances would be tricky, but this would be a really fascinating and far-reaching episode.

Ever evolving protocol MOST important Coffee.

I started at the first podcast 3 months ago and find myself trying to incorporate the evolving protocols, but getting a bit overwhelmed. First I am an over 60 Triathlete who wants to live her best life as long as possible. Here is my new summary of a day: Wake - before sunrise so all the lights on, I do find in the fall and winter I feel the need to leave my light box on until mid afternoon (thoughts?) Activate and stretch muscles NEW - do not drink coffee :( Cardio Work out _ 80 % in zone 2 In zone 2 I am assuming no need to cool the palms of my hands? After zone 2 work out should I be practicing the breathing techniques that Dr Galpin describes Still no Coffee because if vasoconstricts? When do you get your caffeine? Should we be taking a cooler shower after our workout? Work 8 - 9 hours Walk the dog Lifting or do some higher intensity workout Again I can add the cooling of the palms of my hands and breathing after the workout Chores Dinner Warm shower Chamomile tea Sleep I know you are giving us the tools but I am having trouble putting them in order, would you speak to that? I would really appreciate that. Sorry clearly I am trying to adjust my coffee intake and struggling

Weight Training As Cardio

If I lift weights for let's say 30 minutes and my heart rate is in the cardio zone the entire time - do I get a cardio benefit from that? I generally dislike cardio and have always thought I was still getting a benefit while lifting weights. Thanks!

Common Mistakes

What are "common sense" protocols & practices that are actually not helpful or harmful? Or what do people believe that just isn't true?

Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD)

What are your thoughts on the mechanisms behind PSSD? So far no doctors are able to realise a cure for it, leaving thousands of people with terrible ongoing side effects despite discontinuing the drugs, including lack of libido, anorgasmia, anhedonia, erectile issues, reduced genital sensitivity, and a host of other cognitive issues.
