Resiliency for less than ideal food and water?

I'm an Air Force JROTC Survival Instructor and Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue Team Member. A group of us were discussing how people in 3rd world countries can drink parasite infested water and less than ideal stored food and be relatively fine, while others not used to that will quickly become ill. Understanding the amazing adaptive properties of the human body, we wondered if there was any research on how that specific phenomenon works. This is not to suggest a protocol of intentional limited ingestion of parasites to stimulate adaptation is a good idea. However, for those of us that spend a significant amount of time in the field away from city water and refrigeration, any info on those processes would be extremely interesting. Hoping to hear your thoughts!

Effects of cold exposure on exercise performance

In one of your previous episodes, you promoted the idea of cold exposure enhancing exercise performance. However, it seems there are a multitude of studies and meta-analyses that show (to varying degrees) pre- or inter-exercise cold exposure inhibits certain types of activity and has no effect on others. Could you provide a link to the studies you discussed?
