Earplugs

Are earplugs safe? Listening to loud music is harmful, as you’ve said, and earplugs can mitigate that, but do the insertion of earplugs in the ear canal cause issues? Thank you for making my life better.

Setting lifetime goals

Dear Dr. Huberman, what science says about setting a few but solid lifetime goals as soon as possible in life? In the episode "Goals toolkit" you talk about setting quarterly cycle goals but what about those 12 weeks? You repeat the same process on and on with all the decision fatigue and difficulties in pursuing a long term path. In my personal experience, I chose a few lifetime goals, 2 to be completed later in life when I will be over 70 and 2 to be reached as soon as possible (so 4 in different personal areas) and then it has been much much easier to develop a short/medium and long term strategy to acheive these goals. Of course having the final goal in mind, it has been easier to break down the regular activities I should constantly do, the milestones, and all the linked calculations (than of course monthly, quarterly achievements etc.). In this way, I feel rewarded and motivated to go forward in a much easier and durable way. Your episode frankly undermined a little bit this conviction of mine, as you talked about not setting long term goals but mid-term ones. I would really appreciate your feedback about this matter. Thanks for your great and enormous work! Angelo from Bologna :)

You mentioned the (handwritten) list you maintain of problematic topics you refrain from discussing and how it’s growing, have you felt comfortable to take a topic off the list and create an episode based on it?

Setting lifetime goals

Followup of my previous question: I specify that the lifetime goals I was talking about are specific and quantified. For example: to reach Xxx miles by running within 80years old or to be able to do xxx at 80 and so on.

Sleep, exercise & eating schedule for overnight shift workers

I live in Hawaii and I work at a very popular resort in a guest services department and am constantly in front of a computer screen majority of my shift. My usual work schedule is from 10:00pm to 06:00am, 5 nights a week and sometimes work 2 to 4 hours of overtime, either before or after my scheduled shift. I comprehend how important sleep, exercise and a healthy eating routine is for one’s self. I simply cannot figure out how to implement a proper routine or balance around my type of a work schedule. By the time I get off of work, the sun has already begun to rise or pretty high in the sky and I drive home in the direction of the sun. So it makes it a little harder to get ready to sleep. I’m trying to find the best time to exercise and eat. I’ve watched/listened to your advice on optimizing these fundamentals but just don’t know what the appropriate routine would be most beneficial for a night shift worker’s schedule. Could you help with providing some guidance on this specific subject?
